Our Story: The Origins of the Verdon Guides Office

In 1984, climbing in the Verdon Gorges took a decisive turn. The film Opéra Vertical by Jean-Paul Janssen, featuring Patrick Edlinger, attracted a wave of climbers eager to test themselves on the new routes being opened at a rapid pace. It was in this vibrant context that our organization was born.

That year, Alain Moroni, a local mountain guide, teamed up with two other professionals to found the Verdon Guides Office. From its inception, the organization was based on a cooperative model: far from being a simple commercial enterprise, it resembled an association that allowed guides to pool resources while benefiting from strong local roots. The first years were entirely dedicated to climbing, whether on the big walls in the heart of the Gorges or on more accessible satellite cliffs. But soon, a need for diversification emerged. Canyoning, still in its early stages, became a new, fun, and immersive way to discover the Verdon.

The Guides Office adapted: the purchase of the first wetsuits marked the beginning of canyoning descents. Many instructors, holding the State diploma, saw here an opportunity to stabilize their activity and settle in La Palud-sur-Verdon year-round. As the years passed, our organization quietly crossed the 40-year mark! The only thing that has changed is the name, which became (date to be specified) the Maison des Guides du Verdon. The spirit, however, remains unchanged: a small team of passionate individuals, built on collaboration and mutual support. Decisions are made together here. There is no boss, only an elected president.
